Rapid Palatal Expander
A Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) is a fixed orthodontic appliance used to widen the upper jaw and create space for permanent teeth to erupt properly.
Most patients experience little to no tooth discomfort, though there is usually a short adjustment period. During the first few days, you may notice:
- Increased saliva
- Slight lisping while speaking
- Mild difficulty chewing (because the appliance covers the chewing surfaces)
These symptoms typically improve within 2–5 days, depending on the patient’s adaptability.
Eating Guidelines
- Cut food into small, bite-size pieces
- Avoid sticky and hard foods such as candy, gum, caramel, and pretzels
Cleaning Instructions
Food can become trapped between the expander and the roof of the mouth, and this area can be difficult to clean with a toothbrush alone. A water flosser, such as a Waterpik, can be very helpful in rinsing out food debris and keeping the appliance clean.
If Irritation Occurs
Some patients may develop a small sore on the tongue from contact with the expander bar. If this happens:
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Rinse with a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water (or Peroxyl Mouthwash)
- Repeat a few times daily until healed
If the tongue becomes swollen or the sore does not improve within one week, please contact the office to schedule an appointment.
Activation Instructions
To achieve the desired expansion, the appliance must be activated (turned) a specific number of times before your next visit. The doctor will provide detailed instructions on how often and how many turns are required.
