Adolescent Treatment

The ages between 11 and 15 are the most common—and often ideal—time for orthodontic treatment. By around age 12, most permanent teeth have erupted, making it easier to identify concerns such as crooked teeth, gaps, and bite issues. Since these problems rarely correct themselves, this is often when families choose to begin orthodontic care.

This age range can also be an especially comfortable time for treatment. Many children have friends with braces, which helps normalize the experience and makes them more willing to participate in their care.

In addition, children in this stage are still growing, allowing orthodontic treatment to take advantage of natural growth spurts to help guide the bite and tooth alignment. Their faster metabolism can also mean shorter treatment times and less overall discomfort.

After a comprehensive evaluation—including a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) exam—Dr. Tyan will determine whether orthodontic treatment is recommended and the best time to begin. Before starting, he will carefully review the treatment options, expected timeline, and associated fees.
